Most Economical Cars In The UK

Buying a new car is hard enought without having to take its green credentials into consideration. Instead of searching the web for the most fuel efficient cars of 2012, I’ve done the hard work for you and created a list of the 20 most economical new cars in the UK.

As you’ll see, most of them sit in the supermini class but I’ll also be creating a list of the most economical family cars. I’ll update you when it’s complete.

Petrol Cars

1. FIAT 500

The FIAT 500 is a semi-automatic, 875cc (0.9 litre), petrol city car. This car has an on the road price o £12,710.

2. FIAT 500C

Another fuel efficient city car from the same stable as the Fiat 500, the 500C is semi-automatic, 875cc (0.9 litre), petrol engined car. On the road price is £15,260

3. SMART fortwo coupe

The SMART fortwo coupe is a semi-automatic, 999cc (1.0 litre), petrol engine car. Price on the road only currently £9,450.

4. SKODA Citigo

The SKODA Citigo is a 1 litre petrol engine car with a manual, 5 speed gearbox. On the road price for this model is £8,890

5. VW Up!

Unhappy at being left out of the eco car arms race, Volkswagen created the VW Up! For an on the road price of £9,440 you get a manual 5-speed, 998cc, petrol engine city car.

6. SMART fortwo cabrio

Not to be outdone by Fiat’s large offering of city cars, SMART launched the SMART fortwo cabrio (just think of it as the coupe’s sportier big brother). As with the coupe, you get a semi-automatic, 999cc (1.0 litre), petrol engine city car. OTR price £10,950.

7. NISSAN Micra 1.2 DiG-S Visia

With a long history of small, economical cars it’s not surprising to see Nissan in the lineup. The NISSAN Micra Supermini has a manual, 1198cc (1.2 litre), petrol engine. On the road, this car will cost you £11,350.

8. TOYOTA Aygo VVTi

Toyota are a relative newcomer to the city car club but that doesn’t mean they’ve been slacking. The TOYOTA Aygo has a manual 5-speed gearbox, 998cc (1 litre) petrol engine and is one the best selling cars in its class. OTR price £8,535

9. PEUGEOT 107

The PEUGEOT 107 city car has a manual gearbox, 998cc (1 litre) petrol engine. It has been classed as one of the greenest cars on the road by Next Green Car. The Peugeot has an OTR price of £7,995.

10. SEAT Mii 1.0

The SEAT Mii 1.0 Ecomotive is a manual 5-speed, city car with a 998cc (1.0 litre) petrol engine. On the road price for this car is £9,180.

Diesel Cars

1. SMART fortwo coupe Pulse

The SMART fortwo coupe Pulse is a diesel variant of the fourtwo coupe. This city car has a semi-automatic gearbox and a 799cc (0.8 litre) diesel engine. On the road price for this city car is £10,650.

2. SMART fortwo cabrio 1.0 cdi Passion

Another petrol powered car that got a diesel makeover, the Passion is a semi-automatic sports carbrio with a 799cc (0.8 litre) diesel engine. This version will cost you £12,950 on the road.

3. KIA Rio

More newcomers to the supermini market, the KIA Rio 1.1 CRDi 1 74hp ISG has a manual 6-speed gearbox and a 1.2 liter diesel engine. The KIA Rio has an on the road price of £11,895.

4. PEUGEOT 208 1.4

Although it’s pushing at the limits of the supermini tag, the Peugeot 208 1.4 e-HDi Access+ is still a very economical car. Featuring a semi-automatic 5-speed, 1398cc (1.4 litre) diesel engine, the Peugeot 208 Access+ is on the road for £13,345.

5. FORD Fiesta 1.6 Duratorq

Ah, a trip down memory lane… I remember my first Ford Fiesta – it was a pile of junk. If only this version had been around all those years ago. Like the Peugeot 208, the Ford Fiesta 1.6 Duratorq TDCi Edge Econetic is classed as a supermini. With a manual 1560cc (1.6 litre) diesel engine you’ll get a lot more bang for your money than you could from some of the other models listed here.

6. VAUXHALL Corsa ecoFLEX

Another oldie that had a major revamp. The Vauxhall Corsa 1.3CDTI S ecoFLEX has a manual gearbox, 1248cc (1.3 litre) diesel engine and an OTR price of £14,340.

7. SKODA Fabia 1.2 TDI CR Greenline II

It’s been a long, long time since Skoda were last mocked for being bisuit tins on wheels and, when you the Fabia Greeline, you’ll understand why. Featuring a manual geabox and 1199cc (1.2 litre) diesel engine this car is on the road for £13,875.

8. SKODA Fabia Estate 1.2 Greenline II

Looking for something a big more roomy then you might just be interested in the SKODA Fabia Estate. Even though it’s bigger and slightly more expensive than the hatchback model (OTR £14,490) it’s still an impressively environmentally friendly car with a manual gearbos and 1199cc (1.2 litre) diesel engine.

9. HYUNDAI i20 5dr

A supermini with 5 doors? Seems a little pointless to me but it’s selling well so the idea must work. The HYUNDAI i20 has a 6-speed manual gearbox and a 1120cc (1.2 litre) diesel engine. This car has an on the road price of £11,795.

10. RENAULT Megane Coupe 1.5 dCi Expression+

Moving out of the supermini class and into the small family car range. The RENAULT Megane Coupe 1.5 dCi 110 Expression+ is manual 6-speed, diesel engine car with a 1461cc (1.5 litre) engine. On the road price is £19,300 which may a bit pricey for some but remember this wasn’t designed as a city car.

20 economical cars: 10 petrol and 10 diesel. As you may have noticed, all of the have a VED (road tax) liability of £0 and you may be wondering why I went to the trouble of adding this information. Well, a little while ago I wrote a tongue in cheek article about George Osborne levying taxes on eco cars. This means that some of the cars listed above will, at some point, be liable of road tax and a I will add the information here.
